Organizations across industries recognize the importance of talent development, yet many still struggle with retention and succession. The gap isn’t awareness — it’s implementation. Across the country, fleet leaders are confronting the same contradiction: vehicles have evolved into rolling technology platforms, but the systems that recruit, assess, and develop technicians have barely changed in decades. The barriers are not new. The urgency is. Building a sustainable technician corps requires structural modernization, not incremental adjustment.

Much of the leadership strength shaping fleet and mobility has been developed outside the spotlight. Black professionals have long navigated complexity, constraint, and systemic friction – and in doing so, cultivated leadership depth that expands an organization’s competitive capacity. The industry is just beginning to recognize what has been present all along.

In fleet and mobility, visibility is currency. Too many Black-owned supplier businesses rely solely on referrals and digital outreach while million-dollar conversations are happening face-to-face on exhibit floors. Showing up isn’t vanity. It’s velocity.

Every spring, thousands of Black students graduate ready to work – and too many discover the door to real opportunity is still closed. The problem isn’t talent. It’s the systems meant to develop, evaluate, and welcome that talent into the workforce.

Black women are driving results in fleet, mobility, and commercial automotive; often without the recognition, partnership, or compensation that matches their excellence. Yet despite the barriers, they continue to lead. The industry now has the opportunity - and responsibility - to lead with them.

In fleet and mobility, we pour so much into the work of keeping everyone else moving. But during the holiday season, it becomes especially clear: the people who fuel us - our families - deserve our very best energy.

Clean energy is supposed to be the great equalizer. But in practice, marginalized communities are still left behind; bearing the brunt of environmental harm while seeing the fewest benefits from clean energy investments.

Too often, government fleets are seen as cost centers; necessary but draining. The truth? With strategy and vision, municipal fleets can transform into profit-generating assets that create value for taxpayers, agencies, and communities alike.

In mobility, high-stakes roles don’t go to the most visible, they go to the most prepared. For Black professionals, breaking into and excelling in this space requires more than just credentials. It demands strategy, positioning, and the confidence to demonstrate value before you’re even hired.

Quick hires cost more than you think. In a post-COVID, “Insta-era” world, building sustainable teams means rejecting shortcuts and investing in culture, equity, and purpose-driven hiring practices. The payoff? Stronger retention, higher productivity, and businesses that last.
